Green Mountain Reservoir

A trip to the state of Colorado is not complete without a few casts into one of the many rivers and lakes littered throughout the state. Colorado is home to some of the finest fishing in the nation and almost every fishing hole offers breathtaking scenery. Crisp mountain air, deep blue skies and big fish are the hallmarks of a fishing excursion in Colorado. One popular area to try and land fish is in Summit County. Located west of Denver, Summit County and the surrounding area have everything from long wadable rivers to calm, and not-so-calm, mountain lakes. Located north of the quaint mountain hamlet of Dillon and adjacent to the town of Kremmling is Green Mountain Reservoir.

Known for its close proximity to the highly touted Blue River which flows south to north, Green Mountain Reservoir is worth the trip. At Green Mountain Reservoir, the valley is wide open, trees are quite scarce and the wind is fierce enough to blow your off your feet. The land is mostly sagebrush flats rising to the surrounding mountains in every direction. And the fishing is good. Due to its location, quality access and fishing ease, Green Mountain Reservoir does see a fair amount of savvy anglers.

The waters of Green Mountain Reservoir are home to brown and rainbow trout and the area also has one of the strongest contingency of Kokanee salmon in the state. Lake trout up to 15 pounds are also pretty common. The reservoir is not well suited for belly-boating because it is rather deep and exposed to high winds. The inlet area is the popular place to fish and is open to the public. For more information, check with one of the local fishing shops in the area.
