Sitting at an elevation of 9,500-feet and home to 1,200 residents, the small mountain town of Breckenridge, Colorado is both the oldest and largest community in Summit County. Established in 1859, the 146-year-old quaint Victorian town lies in the heart of the Rockies and offers an endless variety of both summer and winter outdoor activities for all skill levels. In the Blue River Valley at the base of the massive Tenmile Range, Breckenridge is a ski town in the truest sense of the term, with the three-mountain Breckenridge Ski Resort dropping nearly to the little town's ski-shop-lined and bustling Main Street. more info

Dating from the mid-19th century, when it was a roaring mining camp, Breckenridge is a National Historic District, and many of its Victorian structures have been beautifully restored. Today, many of these buildings are bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants and retail shops. In contrast, several deluxe hotels, convention centers and condominium complexes are scattered on the hills between Main Street and the ski area.

One of the oldest continually occupied mining towns in the state, Breckenridge still harbors a bit of a frontier feel to it. It's a young and vital town that can still get rowdy on weekend evenings when the bars are packed with ski resort employees and miners down from the mountains happily spending their paychecks.

In the winter, Breckenridge really comes alive. With Breckenridge Ski Resort offering expansive terrain for both experts and beginners, winters in the area take on a special feel. New at the resort this season is the highest lift (12,840-feet) constructed in North America which will allow for easier access to acres of terrain. During the summer, downtown Breckenridge transforms into a shopping mecca with its sidewalks packed with visitors exploring the many shops. Mountain biking, fly fishing, backpacking and hiking are just a few of the many summer outdoor activities available in the area.
