This historic town is promoted as a ghost town, which it is, but Montezuma still boasts residents who live here year-round. The town is listed as one of the best scenic spots in Colorado, and is surrounded by the Front Range of the Rockies.

The Aztec Emperor for whom the town was named would be proud of how Montezuma, Colorado has maintained its own over the years. Founded in 1865, it was populated by some of the prospectors who were mining for silver nearby. By 1890, the population had reached almost 1,000 with the heyday of the Silver Boom. There were two hotels, a post office, sawmill and two stores.

As you drive up from Keystone on the west side of Loveland Pass, you will find the road turns to dirt as it enters the town. This contributes greatly to the atmosphere of this incredible ghost town. Many structures still stand from the earlier boom days. There is the original schoolhouse, the old General Store and some resident cabins.

Montezuma is a place you can't miss on your vacation itinerary to Colorado, a ghost town full of memories of the past that come into full-bloom right in our present day.
