Lake Dillon
Lake Dillon is in the town of Dillon, which was incorporated on January 26, 1883 at the site of a trading post and stage stop. It is interesting to note that Dillon was moved three times: once to be closer to the railroad; a second time to be located between three rivers - the Blue, the Ten Mile, and the Snake; and, the third move began in 1956 when the Denver Water Board told the townspeople that they must sell their property and be out of town by 1961. The town of Dillon is a full service community with a year-round resident population of approximately 750. Dillon's beautiful location in the heart of Summit County provides an unrivaled scenic backdrop for an abundance of summer activities. Its close proximity to the famous Summit County ski areas makes it a convenient spot for winter vacationers. The many condominiums and motel rooms bring the peak population to about 4,000 people.
Lake Dillon is the largest lake in the area and is home to Brown and Rainbow trout, as well as Kokanee Salmon. With 26 miles of shoreline, finding a nice secluded spot to cast is not a problem.
There are also scenic, historic boat tours of Lake Dillon. One of the most spectacular lakes in the state of Colorado, this is something for every visitor to behold and enjoy.
Canoeing and kayaking and sailing are all popular activities on Lake Dillon, also.
Lake Dillon also is a bicyclist's paradise with bike paths and miles of back-country roads and trails. All of this located in a stunning mountain setting, create ideal conditions for two-wheeled touring. The richly varied topography of the region presents both novice and advanced mountain bikers with many choices: following historic byways past aging mining camps, retracing abandoned routes of railroads that once passed through the County and exploring the many high alpine roads and trails crisscrossing innumerable sky piercing peaks.
