In connecting Silver Plume and Georgetown, towns over 2 miles apart, the tracks scaled an elevation of 640 feet over mountainous terrain, requiring trestles, cuts, fills, loops, and curves totaling 4.5 miles. Today the Loop is once again a popular tourist attraction and an uncommon way to see the Clear Creek Valley.

Along the route visitors may stop for guided tours of a historic silver mine. The park is located on 978 acres and includes an 1884 depot, the Morrison Interpretive Center, two 1860s mines, an 1871 mill building, four reconstructed mine buildings, a locomotive maintenance building, the 1874 Pohle House, and a new rolling stock shelter.

Georgetown
Georgetown offers a variety of attractions: restaurants, shops, museums and recreational opportunities. Enjoy great shopping on Sixth Street in the National Historic Landmark District.

Since its beginning as a mining camp in 1859, Georgetown has attracted those who have sought something very special. First it was the magic of gold and silver ore, now it's the beauty and ambiance of this picturesque town surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. Whether your visit is for the day or the week, the knowledgeable staff at the Georgetown Gateway Visitors Center and the Downtown Visitors Center will be delighted to help you.

Birth of a Historic Park
In 1959, the centennial year of the discovery of gold at Georgetown, the Colorado Historical Society founded the Georgetown Loop Historic Mining and Railroad Park.

The Society's chairman negotiated a donation of mining claims and mills, and nearly 100 acres of land.
Rail line construction began in 1973 with track and ties donated by the Union Pacific Railroad.
From 1978 through 2004, the railroad was operated by Georgetown Loop Railroad, Inc., and became a popular tourist attraction.
