Community Information

Summit County lies in the heart of the Rockies, right along the Continental Divide. The county was given its name because of the mountains that surround it. It is physically one of the smallest counties in Colorado but encompasses a land so rich in wilderness, national forest, and outdoor recreation opportunities that it would make any visitor feel like they had found paradise. The entire county has a population of just fewer than 25,000 and welcomes almost 2 million visitors every year. Although tourists seek accommodations in and spend a majority of their time in the well known villages of Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain, the outlying towns and communities are home to most of the area's residents. The towns of Summit County, CO include Blue River, Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, Keystone, Montezuma, and Silverthorne.

Some of these more remote communities in Summit County seem very small and sleepy, but they actually have more year round residents than one would expect. Montezuma has only 50 year round residents and Blue River is home to 764. Dillon has a population of 796. In fact, the community of Dillon has changed locations three times. The first time the community wanted to be close to the railroad, and then wanted to be within close proximity to the rivers Blue, Snake, and Ten Mile. The last move brought the town to its current location along the shore of the Dillon reservoir. Keystone was named as the site of the railroad station. Its ski resort opened in 1970 and today is home to 825 persons. Frisco, named after San Francisco, CA, has a community of 2,490 people. Breckenridge is by far the most historic town and is also the county seat. It is home to a popular ski area and to 2,670 year round residents. Silverthorne has the largest community of locals, home to about 3,500 residents. Because these towns are all within a close distance from each other, they rely on business and amenities of others to survive. Summit County really seems like an expansion of one town with many different neighborhoods. The communities of all towns are welcoming and share a similar respect for their surroundings and environment.
